Rava Upma(Sooji Upma)

RAVA UPMA is a popular breakfast made with Sooji. It is the easiest and quickest instant breakfasts. There are many varieties of upma that are commonly made. It is made by continuously stirring semolina(sooji). Upma goes well with Pesarattu.

  Sooji is rich in iron, fiber, protein, rich in B vitamins, contains no cholesterol and also boots energy.
                                                               


Ingredients:
  1. Sooji - 1 cup
  2. Onion - 1
  3. Red/Green chillies - 2
  4. Ginger - inch
  5. Salt
  6. Water
For Thadka:
  1. Oil - 1 tbsp
  2. Ghee - 1 tbsp
  3. Urad dal - 1 tbsp
  4. Chana dal - 1 tbsp
  5. Cumin(Jeera) - 1 tbsp
  6. Mustard seeds - 1/2 tbsp
  7. Curry leaves - spring
  8. Peanuts
Preparation:
  • Heat pan , add sooji and roast on a low flame. Stir continuously.
  • Do not brown the rava as the flavor of upma changes. Transfer to a bowl.
  • You can also use instant roasted rava, available in super markets.
Method:
  1. Pour ghee, oil to the pan and heat it. Add peanuts(you can also use cashews), mustard seeds, cumin, urad dal, chana dal and saute medium flame until it turns golden color.
  2. Now add sliced onion, chillies, ginger, curry leaves and fry until onion turns transparent.
  3. Add 2 1/2 cups of water, salt and redcue flame to low.
  4. When the water begins to boil, taste water and adjust salt.
  5. Pour rava with one hand and constantly stir the water with ladle using other hand to avoid lumps.
  6. Close with a lid and off the flame and leave it for 5 mins.
You can serve upma with lemon juice.
